A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, carrying 18,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.

Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
