New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
