EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
