Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
